Hi guys; in my continued quest to get my custom turbo complete, I'm looking at ignition timing right now. I've got a '96 GSR, planning on running about 7-8 psi boost. I'll be upgrading fuel with a pump and FMU (I think I really MUST have a boost-sensitive fuel pressure increase).
But back to the ignition - I've found a few used J&S safeguards for sale... and one Ultra Safeguard (V1). As I understand it, the V2 ultra is better for turbo because of the map sensor limit, but can I make a V1 work on a turbo setup if I use check valves? And if I have a J&S, do I really need anything else to deal with ignition timing? I was going to get an MSD BTM, but if the J&S is such hot stuff, can't it take care of that on its own? (obviously I won't leave my timing at 18 btdc baseline)
Let me know... I'd like to keep my costs down as much as possible but the safeguard seems like a really good idea. Especially if it negates the need for a MSD BTM which would require a whole new ignition system to have boost retard.
Thanks for any info and suggestions!!

Actually, they do have the BTM available for stock ignitions as well. it would be the most cost effective way to control ignition timing if you can do without the safeguards detonation control. if you're interested, I have a used unit that I'm trying to sell for about $80 plus shipping, I paid 160 for it from Summit about 6 months ago, but have since switched to the JR BTC as it seems to have better results with a s/c, but since you're turbo, this unit is fine if you can do without the ignition parts of the 6BTM.

The J&S ultra does have the BTM abilities built in which is what makes it such a great deal when you compare it to the old J&S. You could put together the same thing with a BTM, an a used J&S, but you still miss out on a few new features that the J&S ultra has, not too sure exactly what they are though. I had the old J&S as well, but I decided that it wasn't worth my 550 bucks, the new unit though, since its selling for a similar price with the dual monitor would be quite a good deal. You could probably pick up a used J&S for about 300-350 at the moment, at least that's what I'd pay, and then pickup my BTM for 80,
....whatever you decide, let me know, thanks.

OK, that seems like a good plan... I still like the idea of the J&S because I'll be planning on doing a lot of tuning to my car in the long run and I'd like to get the right equipment to start with. So I guess my question at the moment is will the J&S be enough without using a BTM? Or does the J&S ultra have a BTM built in?
If not... I'll be emailing you about that BTM for sale. Thanks for the info so far...
Anyone else?
